Daytime sleep

If you little ones first sleep of the day is too early it will affect the time they wake up the following day. So if the bedtime ritual and warmth are not issues then start to move the daytime sleep later by 20 minutes every 3 days until you find a time that they are sleeping in until 7am in the morning.

★ Too much daytime sleep

Some babies and toddlers need less daytime than others, so you can try cutting the amount of daytime sleep to see if this helps your baby sleep in until 7 am.

Average daytime sleep:

Under 5 months: 4 hours 45 minutes

5 - 7 months: 4 hours 20 minutes

7 - 9 months: 4 hours

9 - 12 months: 3 hours

12 months+

Daytime - do not let sleep longer than:

12 - 18 months: 2 hours 30 minutes

18 - 2 years: 2 hours 15 minutes

2 - 3 years: 2 hours

3 years: 1 hour

★ When they are 3 years old, your toddler should not need more than 1 hour of day sleep, and this will

turn into rest time as they get older. It is normal for your 3 year old to sleep every other day.
